Objectives and Methods

There are 2 groups making CTD measurements in St Paul. One is a group of school children who sample off the City South Dock within the harbor, and the other is the Ecosystem Conservation Office who sample off the North Dock near the entrance to the harbor. C2O2 also provided St Paul with a microscope that can take digital photos, so we hope to be displaying those images as well.

Saint Paul Island is one of the Bering Sea's Pribilof Islands, located about 250 miles north of the Aleutian Island chain and 750 miles west of Anchorage, AK. Known as the "Galapagos of the North", the Pribilofs are home to the majority of the world's population of Northern Fur Seals. Over 200 species of birds have been seen, including some that are only rarely seen away from the islands. Birdwatching is an important facet of the local tourism industry. Whales, sea lions, arctic foxes, and reindeer can also be found here.

History runs deep on this volcanic-origin island. Mammoths survived on Saint Paul Island until only about 6,000 years ago. Fossilized sea shells dating back 200,000 years can be found at the base of tall cliffs overlooking the town. The island is home to about 500 individuals, of whom nearly 90% are Unangan (Aleut), making this the largest US population of the Unangan people.
