As is true with the FWD time series, the mean annual cycle only presents part of the picture for us. If you recall the Upwelling Index plot (slide #4), it indicated a large amplitude downwelling wind stress in all non-summer months, and weak upwelling in summer months. As measured by the Middleton Island station, ALL months are shown here to be mean downwelling. In addition, at least 5% of all non-summer months are mean UPWELLING. This implies that 35% of all winters at some point experience one month of mean upwelling. We think this might be an important source of inter-annual variability to the observed fresh water distribution.
